The Deadliest Addiction
Where’s your 12 Step meeting?
You don’t drink
You don’t smoke
You don’t do drugs (anymore)
You do the Nice Girl Thing
The self-sacrificing, self-abandoning thing
Yeah.
That.
It doesn’t look like an addiction.
It looks like being a good wife.
A loving mother.
A woman who holds everything together.
And for a long time… it worked.
You were needed.
Valued.
Relied upon.
But now something’s changed.
The house is quieter.
The roles don’t fit the same way they used to.
And instead of feeling free…
you feel tired.
Not just physically tired.
But the kind of tired that comes from
years—decades—of putting yourself last.
You are not alone. Women the world over are f*cking tired.
Consider the stats: 70% to 80% of people with autoimmune diseases are female.
Why is this? Why are women so damn tired?
Could it be this silent, imperceptible addiction?
The compulsion to show up every day, in all our relationships, and in every situation as the perfect woman; the good girl.
Advertising targets us
We’re too young, too old
Too thin, too fat,
Too dumb, too smart…
This list goes on and on ad infinitum.
We are never and can never be enough.
Our bodies must be cleansed, perfumed, waxed, and kept in the ultimate f*ckable shape.
Bred like prize winning brood mares, women internalize this idea that our primary purpose is as a support system for others.
Is it any wonder that, after a lifetime of living from this premise, we’re not only exhausted, but feel a little bit lost?
Because the truth is—
You were never taught to build a life around your own desires.
You were taught to be good.
To be supportive.
To be easy to love.
To please
You learned how to anticipate what others needed…
and become that.
So of course you’re exhausted.
You’ve been performing a role your entire life
without ever being asked who you actually are.
And now, here you are.
At a moment where something inside you is stirring.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
Just a quiet, persistent feeling that says:
There has to be more than this.
And here’s the part that matters:
This isn’t a flaw in you.
It’s a pattern.
And patterns can change.
You don’t have to burn your life down.
You don’t have to become someone new.
But you do get to start asking different questions.
What do I want?
What do I feel?
What matters to me now?
And slowly… honestly…
You begin to come back to yourself.
